Mickey & the Hartbeats at the Matrix, 12/16/68
There are disputes as to the date of this show, but it’s listed on Archive as 12/16 so that’s what we’re going with. What’s indisputable, though, are the majestic jams therein. Okay, put me on a desert island with a gun to my head and I’ll take the GD proper, but these Hartbeats shows fill a void in the need for pure id jamming. In fact, you may notice that the setlist for this show consists of “Jam, Jam>Jam”. There are little themes that pop up here and there but Jerry seems determined to sort of sabotage those before they reach fruition every time, and keep it wide, wide open. If you’ve got your earbuds in and you’re mountainbiking some gnarly trails or longboard-bombing a serious San Francisco grade or just sitting catatonic on your couch, this jam’s for you.
1977 UK reissue of the Dark Star/Born Cross Eyed 45.
Here’s hoping this finds its way to my mailbox today..
Grateful Dead, Philadelphia Civic Arena, 08/05/1974
This show is pure summertime, and it contains no fewer than three bonkers “Take a Step Back”s. That’s what you’ve always wanted in a show, right? That, and killer playin’. Guess that’s what led to the crush. Nice long one, too.
